Meet our STaR Coaches

Karshana Kalyanaraman (University of Pittsburgh)

My name is Karshana, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. From science classes to shadowing doctors, I was looking for opportunities to develop my scientific interests. So, when I was 16 years old, I started my research career by joining a biomolecular modeling research team at a local university. The following year, I completed a year-long internship in the Faustino Lab at Sanford Research, leading an independent project in cardiology. With my interest in both clinical and translational medicine, I am in the University of Pittsburgh BS/MD program and an undergraduate researcher at the Vascular Medicine Institute. As a STaR coach, I am eager to help students utilize their passion for science to become well-rounded scientists!

Cheryl Quartey (Vanderbilt)

My name is Cheryl and STEM accessibility programs throughout my childhood were key to solidifying my love for science. These experiences led to my current undergraduate studies of Data Science and Molecular and Cellular Biology at Vanderbilt University. I am also passionate about STEM mentorship and currently serve as a biology learning assistant; a team leader for a middle school STEM volunteer program; and now as a mentor for the STaR Program. As a STaR Coach, I will provide mentorship and an open ear for high school students interested in research, and I look forward to getting to know STaR mentees and crafting a personalized experience for each student.
